A dowel pin locates or aligns two parts. This page lists three types: spring pins to DIN 1481, taper dowel pins to DIN 1 and solid pins to Indian Standard 6669. Grades include EN-42 J, EN-8 and stainless steel 202 and 304. The pictures show solid pins, slotted spring pins and plain pins.
How the three types differ: a spring pin is a slotted steel tube that squeezes slightly as it enters its hole and then grips by spring tension, so the hole needs less precision. A taper pin is driven into a tapered, reamed hole and wedges tight, which gives an exact fit and allows the part to be removed and refitted. A solid pin is a plain cylinder pressed into reamed holes for accurate, permanent location.
